The underbutler’s role was to act as the butler’s assistant, and to fill in during a butler's illness or absence. Due to its nature as a supporting role for household management, having an underbutler was an exclusive privilege reserved only for the most prestigious homes.
The days of mechanical bell pull systems are long gone, but as the saying goes - the more things change, the more they stay the same.
